The Astrology of December 2020

A lot of good shifts happening.

The dope is that there's still hope.

In my practice, I focus on Natal Astrology because that’s where we find information about purpose and get clarity about who we are. I focus on this because this information can really inform your next chapter and your next steps in midlife.

I’m take a dip into current astrology because this December is so monumental. And it relates to careers and work in a big way.

December 2020 Astrology

There’s so much happening in the sky in December, and any single one of these things would make the month significant. Even if you’re not into astrology, but you’re into good news, it’s worth looking at.

The good news is that there are shifts out of where we’ve been this year. There’s so much happening, but for this post I’m going to focus on 1) Lunar eclipses, 2) Saturn/Jupiter and the “great conjunction”.

You can find a comprehensive list of all the December happenings here. You can find out more about how I work with Natal charts here.

Bookended Lunar Eclipses.

On November 30, there was a full moon, which was an eclipse. On December 14, there is a new moon (ie. not visible moon in the sky) which is also an eclipse.

The November full moon ignited uncertainty, tension, anxiety. So, if you’ve been feeling a heightened sense of insecurity (with the virus raging, it’s no wonder), hold on. Things you’re feeling nervous about are really being highlighted.

On to the good news … the December 14 new moon marks a new beginning. It takes the focus off insecurity and brings in positive well-balanced energy. It gives the desire and energy to make plans, set goals and act on them with confidence and courage.

And it’s also an eclipse, so it’s on hyperspeed. New paths may open. You may feel the desire to expand your horizons. We’re being asked to grow and go beyond where we’ve been before. There’s optimism and a sense of adventure.

Where you were once unsure and hesitant, you may start to feel direct and assertive. While there is potential for confusion, there is a stronger potential for quick thinking and clarity. This helps you know what’s right for you, even when you’re getting mixed messages from the outside world. It’s fresh energy that brings the promise of new beginnings and fresh starts. And boy, do we need that.

If there was ever a time to shift your mindset to being positive and expecting abundance, it’s on and around December 14. It’s likely to be the brightest energy of the year, but you have to notice it.

Until December 14, be aware and curious about the uncertainty you may be feeling, but don’t completely buy into it. And then be open to the strong, abundant energy of December 14. Look for it.

The month ends with a full moon in Cancer on December 29. It’s time for some self-care and feeling wrapped in the feminine.

Saturn leaves Capricorn

A few days later, on December 16, the tough-love planet Saturn leaves Capricorn and moves into Aquarius. Saturn in Capricorn has been about hard work (maybe unrewarded hard work) and it’s been there for 2.5 years. It’s about restriction, slow-movement, reeaaallllllly getting lessons, where the only way out is through. It’s tough but necessary.

We have collectively been learning things about patience and endurance and keeping the faith, even in the darkest hours of 2020. We’ll all feel relief when Saturn leaves Capricorn (especially if you are a Capricorn). The shift is from old-school lessons to future-forward ideas.

Jupiter Follows Saturn into Aquarius.

Jupiter, the planet of expansion, which for the past year has been out of its element also moves into Aquarius on December 19. We begin to see new opportunities to grow, expand and evolve our social systems.

Jupiter Conjuncts Saturn in Aquarius

This is the most significant event and happens on December 21, Winter Solstice. This conjunction happens every 20 years. This is the closest these planets have been since 1226 and will form a rare Christmas Star. If you look at the sky that night, you’ll see this Great Conjunction.

What does this mean? It’s the beginning and end of a 20 year cycle. It’s a time of new beginnings, of harvesting our hard-won lessons. Where were you in your career 20 years ago in December 2000? Where there any shifts in the following months? It might feel the same.

This time we’re stepping out of the shadow of Capricorn and into Aquarius where we have the freedom to truly decide what’s right for right now. We shed old rules that no longer fit.

A new 200 year cycle.

The other big news is that this is the end of a 200 year cycle. The cycle we’re leaving has been in the earth element – the industrial revolution, World Wars, post-war foundations of business and distribution.

The next 200 year cycle is in the air element. It’s going to be about thinking in new ways and in technological advancements we can’t even imagine. It too has its shadow side so it’s not all unicorns and rainbows. But, it won’t have the constraint feeling, the bottomless pit of working hard feeling to it we’ve had for the past few years. And we’ll be moving from earth to air at the same time. There will be real opportunities and reward for hard work.

What does this mean personally?

How does this all relate to you? Here are questions to ask yourself:

Where do old ideas feel constraining and no longer serve who you are becoming?

In what way does thinking for yourself give you the feeling of freedom?

Where have you done all the right things, but at great personal cost? Have you been delivered the booby prize? Have you hung onto a marriage that doesn’t work for you? Have you stuck it out in a job for all the right reasons only to be left doing something you are ill-suited to? Have you been checking cultural boxes only to realize you’d rather live modestly and meaningfully?

The wind at your back.

With this new configuration acting as the wind at your back: How can you actively create a future that fits the shape of your heart, the shape of your soul? What bold moves can you make in the direction of freeing yourself from an old way of thinking and being?

Doors will open in 2021. After that it will get harder for awhile. If you see a doorway and it feels right in 2021, go through it.
